When a homeowner realizes that extra security is needed in order to protect one’s family and property, then that person will probably begin determining whether or not it is best to have a system professionally installed, or if the job can be done by the homeowner.

If the homeowner decides or realizes that the job can be easily performed without the aid or need of professional installers, the homeowner can then concentrate on which type of system is best for the home and property. There are basically two types of systems: hard-wired and wireless.

Hard-wired systems operate through the use of the house current. The system is wired into the existing home electrical wiring and supply, and monitors, control boxes, and sensors placed where needed.

A wireless system operates on signals such as those produced by radio or other electromagnetic waves. Some wireless systems are considered “supervised”, meaning the system monitors sensors to ensure that the control panel is receiving the signals and directing them to the control panel. Further, “supervised” systems can sometimes be monitored by a central alarm company, if the homeowner so chooses and contracts with the company to have this service.

Other systems are considered “portable” or “removable”. They are plugged into any power source when needed, then removed and stored until the next use.

No matter what type of system the homeowner chooses, the installation should be done in such a way that the alarm system will work properly. Sensors and monitors should not be placed to where they will pick up extraneous noises that might be interpreted as an intruder, thus causing “false” alarms.

The transmitters and receiving devices should be installed in locations that will ensure that true signals can be received. If the signals are too weak, this may cause the system to not operate properly.
